A 39-33 lead at the break turned into an old Maryland vs Duke Alley Fight as it went nip and tuck in the 2nd half. Maryland's Leading Scorer Dez Wells poured all of his 17 points in the 2nd half as he had a few Heat Checks. Both Teams shot poorly from the Arc and it came down to who was going to make the play, shot, or get a "Stop"...and of all things it was a botched lay-up attempt that fell off the rim to give the Dukies a 69-67 win.
Duke did it behind the baddest Freshman and maybe player in the Land in Chicago Simeon Career Academy's Jabari Parker. Parker led all scorers with 23 points as he also grabbed eight Oranges and was 9 of 10 from the stripe. Both of Duke's other two scoring options Rodney Hood (11 pts) and Rasheed Sulaimon ( 11 pts) helped Parker balance out the Duke Attack. A sizable 34-19 Free Throw Attempts Advantage coupled with the Blue Devils connecting on 28 of 34 put them in the Winner's Circle.
The Fighting Turtles get a team-high 18 points an six boards from Jake Layman. Charles Mitchell added 12 and six with the aforementioned Wells 17 and six rebounds. The Terps had their chance in the end when a lay-up rimmed off the right side of the rim as Duke grabbed the board. Not looking for Wells in that situation was a no-go for Maryland as he was their hottest hand in the 2nd half. Terps Lead Man Mark Turgeon March Madness hopes might have taken a huge hit as they needed this one for their Record and Resume Builder.
Duke moves to 9-3 in the ACC and 20-5 overall as they chase the Orange and Virginia Cavaliers. The Terps moving to the Big Ten in 2014-15 falls to 6-7 in the ACC and 14-12 overall.
