I know the story as H.S Legend and Coach Jack Curran from the famous Archbishop Malloy H.S. in Jamaica/Queens N.Y. (Also home to @TheJetOnTNT Kenny Smith, Kenny Anderson, and Robert Werdann all McDonald's All-Americans) made the call to an old friend one day late in the college recruiting period. That Coach was named Rick Pitino who was at Louisville and Curran was talking about RUSS-diculous Smith!
Smith had no offers maybe one to Manhattan University but Curran insisted that Coach Pitino take him and he will not disappoint the Cards. Now some six years later a "Chip" and an assortment of Accolades and an easy Top 10 Louisville Cardinals Player of All-Time Smith is at it again proving folks wrong at every turn, crossover, and bucket!
After a 15 point and nine assist performance the Memphis Grizzlies in sudden-death at the Mouse Town Summer League beats the O-Magic Varsity Team dba White Team 75-73 as is it was RUSS-diculous with a left-handed runner for the game-winner.
Now what do the Grizzlies do to sign Smith as he is more than ready to be the Spark Plug off the bench and behind Mike Conley Jr. to get the Grizz Reinforcements playing at a high-level. Yes the "Logo" is all about Analytics as the non-Basketball Guy can carve out a niche in the Logo in the front office and I get that. But what most of them cannot relate to is the "Eye Test" and it never lies!
Look Russ Smith goes against the grain in every facet but quit giving me NBA Combine Numbers and let me see the tape and let's play some Summer League Ball as the "Ball don't Lie"!
