They say Madison Square Garden aka MSG is the MECCA of Basketball. But before the indoors NEW YORK City has some of the finest Outdoor Venues where you can make a name for yourself......Like Holcombe RUCKER PARK, Riverbank STATE Park, and West 4th Street Park in Manhattan......played to some of the BEST STREET HOOPERS ever.

Remember "Tiny" Nate ARCHIBALD and what he did coming out of New York City and playing for the Kansas City KINGS and Boston CELTICS to name a few. Well in 1989 the #1 High School player in the LAND came out of NEW YORK CITY and his name was Kenny 'the SNAKE" ANDERSON.....the CHOSEN ONE....the next Great Left-Handed PG out of GOTHAM CITY.

Anderson hailed from QUEENS Area of new York City and played in NEW YORK City with all the HYPE. And was the hype over hyped.......not at all. He played for Archbishop MALLOY HS in NY CITY the home of players such as Robert WERDANN 1988 McDonald's All-American who went on to the JOHNNIES of St. JOHN'S and Kenny "the ORIGINAL JET" SMITH 1983 McDonald's All-American who went on to play for UNC CHAPEL HILL and is now one of the NBA on TNT Analysts.

There was no one in the US that could stick Kenny and it was proven at a lot of Big Time Summer Camps where the NATIONS best played. The Top of the 1989 National HS Rankings look like this

Jimmy JACKSON Toledo MACOMBER WHITNEY HS OH
Bobby HURLEY Jr. St. ANTHONY'S Jersey City NJ
Douglas EDWARDS Miami SENIOR HS the OLDEST of 3 Good DOUGLAS BOYS
Allan HOUSTON Louisville BALLARD HS KY
Shaquille O'NEAL San ANTONIO COLE HS TX
George LYNCH Falls Church FLINT HILL PREP VA now defucnt
Jamal FAULKNER Middle Village CHRIST the KING HS NY
Deon THOMAS Chicago SIMEON HS ILL

WOW.......and you thought you knew none of these guys.....FAMILIAR FACES YES........could they all play at least on the HS LEVEL.....the best of the BEST....and KENNY was the BEST of them all.

After a Recruiting WAR between UNC CHAPEL HILL and Georgia TECH....the YELLOW JACKETS and Bobby CREMINS won out. Before Kenny even suited up in a Georgia TECH Jersey ATL was going NUTS over their new SUPERSTAR. Heck by then the HAWKS nor the FALCONS were doing anything even though the DIRTY BIRDS had just drafted PRIME TIME from FSU Fame.

Kenny was a freshman that joined Senior G Brian OLIVER and Junior Forward Dennis "3D" SCOTT. They were so lethal from the start of the season they were later termed at GA TECH as LETHAL WEAPON 3.....just like the MOVIE. Then throw in another prized recruit CREMINS had from CHATTANOOGA TN ...Center Malcolm MACKEY....they had all bases COVERED. Kenny Led ht group all the way to the Final Four in New Orleans where they lost in the Semifinals.

Anderson returned for his sophomore and was a one man show on his way to the NBA DRAFT after just 2 seasons in A T L. The New Jersey NETS picked Anderson #2 in 1991 and he joined this NJ NETS DUO under Legendary LATE Coach Chuck DALEY.....Derrick COLEMAN and the LATE Drazen PETROVIC. Those NETS teams were fun to watch as they were about to turn the corner and the TRAGIC DEATH of DRAZEN on the German AUTOBAHN....left the NETS hurting at the Shooting Guard. Kenny played in JERSEY until 1996 and then went was traded to the Charlotte Hornets and really never got on track as off the COURT ISSUES started to catch up with the SNAKE.

Anderson ended up playing for about 7-8 teams from the time he was in CHARLOTTE until retirement. Look at these ACCOLADES from his HS Days:

3-Time All-City NY CITY only ALCINDOR did that 4 Times
Gatorade NATIONAL Player of the YEAR
Parade MAGAZINE National PLAYER of the YEAR
USA TODAY National PLAYER of the YEAR
Naismith HS BASKETBALL Player of the YEAR
1989 NY STATE's Mr. BASKETBALL

I won't even go into the COLLEGE and Professional Accolades Kenny won.......he was simply as good as advertised......and he is NEW YORK'S City Own.....Born and Raised
