The Northwestern Wildcats came into today's action leading the Big Ten West by two full games at 5-1 and needed to get a "W" and a Purdue Boilermaker "L" to grab the Big Ten West Title. After a battle with the #21 Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa with a ground game and winning the takeaway margin the 'Cats did just that and are crowned Big Ten West Champs for the 2018 Big Ten Season.
It was Northwestern RB Isaiah Bowser carrying the Pigskin 31 times for a robust 165 yards and a score that propelled that NU Offensive Attack to a huge win over the Hawkeyes today at Kinnick Stadium 14-10. NU QB Clayton Thorson played well enough going 15 for 30 for 122 yards and a score to also key the victory.
Thorson did throw two picks but it was that 'Cats "D" with that bend but don't break scheme that kept the Hawkeyes for the most part at bay. Yes Iowa QB Nate Stanley threw for 269 yards and a score but the 'Cats held that Hawkeyes ground game in check as Iowa only had 64 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Iowa then late in the 4th had back to back fumbles that spelled gloom and doom for the Hawkeyes sealing the victory for the 'Cats. Northwestern did need help as the Purdue Boilermakers lost to the Gophers of Minnesota and the 'Cats needed that to happen and get a "W" and they did just that!
NU heads to Indy for the 2k18 Big Ten Championship Game maybe for a possible rematch with the only "L: they had in the Big Ten...the Michigan Wolverines imagine that!
From the Northwestern Official Twitter Account for the 'Cats Football @NUFBFamily they posted this:
Congrats BIGCats!
