WHEAT SHOCKERS
>
ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK
They came into the game trying to make it their 3rd straight 30-win season as they have ran the Missouri Valley Conference (M.V.C) the last 36 months. They are known for their Hardball and former Shockers All-American Pitcher/OF Darren Driefort. Well Shock Nation Basketball has come full circle and the Wheat Shockers made some noise beating the In-State Kansas Jayhawks to advance to the Sweet 16.
Behind lead man Gregg Marshall and one of the best back courts in the land in Juniors Fred Van Fleet and Ron Baker the Wichita State Shockers shock the Jayhawks 78-65 and beating them going right at KU for 40 minutes.
The Wheat Shockers needed all five starters to play "Big" and they did with all in double figures. Tekele Cotton led Shock nation with 19 points as Van Fleet added 17 points, six assists, and six boards. Baker dropped a dozen and the underrated Evan Wessel added a dozen to go with nine boards. Then add a 10-20 clip from deep (19'9") and KU only shooting 6 for 21 from the same distance...ball game!
Kansas shoots 35% from the field and under 30% from the arc as Junior PF and Wichita native Perry Ellis led with 17 points and eight boards. Frank Mason III added 16 points and six assists and six boards as he matched Van Fleet in the books but not on the hardwood as "Mase" was saddled with foul trouble for most of the game. Kansas Guard DeVonte Graham played extremely well coming from Brewster Academy New Hampshire matching Ellis with 17 points as well.
C'mon 30-4 and 17-1 through the M.V.C. is no small feat as Baker and Van Fleet and Cotton have been in their share of big games for going on 36 months. Shock nation now moves into the Sweet 16 where they will face Notre Dame in Cleveland joining the Kentucky Wildcats.
