Here is your first shocker but it won't be the last. A #3 vs #14 match up goes into the UAB Blazers hands as they go nip and tuck with the 2015 Big 12 Tourney Champion Iowa State Cyclones and beat them 60-59.
The game was a microcosm of what the Cyclones did a lot this season an that was playing down to the competition and not coming out with urgency. Taking nothing away from UAB but the Cyclones get a bad match up and paid for it.
UAB led 31-28 at the break as they never led by more than three points in the 2nd half. To Iowa State's Credit they still stayed the course looking for that patented run they have been making all season long and that didn't come.
With 41 seconds remaining Cyclones PG Monte Morris hit a "J" for an ISU 57-56 lead. The Blazers came right back with William Lee hitting a jumper with 26 seconds remaining giving UAB a 58-57 lead. The Cyclones 2014-15 M.V.P. Georges Niang missed a "J' with 17 seconds remaining as William Lee was fouled and hit both free throws making 60-57 UAB.
The Cyclones Naz Long would miss a potential game-tying money ball as Morris tips it in but UAB advances at the KFC Yum Center 60-59 in a shocker. UAB Guard Robert Brown had a game-high 21 points (3 for 7 three-point FGs) and Williams added 14 points and a dozen boards. UAB had 19 offensive boards and was +15 on the glass after shooting just 3 for 17 from deep.
The Cyclones were led by Morris' 15 points , Niang's 11 points and seven boards with Matt Thomas adding a eleven points. No "Hilton Magic" this time as the Cyclones get killed on the glass and that as the story of the game.
UAB and Blazer Mania advances to the Round of 32 to play the winner of #6 SMU and #11 UCLA...
