Current Nats Skipper Davey Johnson knew what he had and they delivered in the biggest most scrutinized market Gotham City. Johnson led the Mets to the 1986 Fall Classic Chip over the BoSox as it was that Great Amazin's Pitching Staff that was the key.

Led by Right-Handed Ace Dwight "DOC" Gooden and 2 Lights Out Arms in the Pen the Mets had by far the best Staff in the Show. The Amazins' went an astonishing and still Club Record 108-54 and  they beat a Staff in the National League Championship Series of the Mike "GREAT" Scott, Bob Knepper, and a finally slowing down of sorts the "EXPRESS" Nolan Ryan who is currently the Texas Rangers Majority Owner.

Yes the Amazins' had Captain Keith and the Late Great HOF Catcher Gary Carter to go with a host of talented players like Mookie Wilson, Straw, Ray Knight (Married to then LPGA Tour Star Nancy Lopez), Wally Backman, Lenny Dykstra, and the young and up and coming Star OF Kevin Mitchell. From a Clubhouse point of view you could only imagine what went on and some of it has been well-documented in many circles.

The 1986 Amazins' Staff by Numbers from Baseball-Reference.com is sponsored by if only Doc Gooden was partying all the time he could have duplicated or topped his 1984 year of 24-4:

Starters Numbers

#1 DOC Gooden 17-6...2.84 ERA
#2 Ron Darling 15-6.....2,81 ERA
#4 Bob Ojeda 18-5....2.57 ERA
#3 Sid Fernandez 16-6...3.52 ERA
#5 Rick Aguilera 10-7....3.88 ERA

The Amazins' 2-Headed Monster in Relief

RHP Roger McDowell 14-9...3.02 ERA 22 SVS
LHP Jesse Orosco 8-6....2.33 ERA 21 SVS

Amazins' Starters combined for 148 of 162 possible Starts and went a combined 76-30 as a Staff, 27 Complete Games, Sid, Doc, and Darlings combined for 584 K's,  a combined 3.12 ERA as a Staff, and just think the #4 Starter Ojeda posted a 18-5 Record.

On the Back End Ojeda and Crazy Roger McDowell combined for 133 Appearances, 209 Innings pitched, a 22-15 Record, and 43 Saves.

The Amazins' overcame the Red Sox what looked to be the Series Clincher in Game 6 to miraculously force a Game 7 due to the erratic BoSox Relief Pitching of Calvin Schraldi and some unusual Errors in the Field.

This 1986 Amazins' Staff will go down as Arguably the Best Mets Staff in Amazins' History and I know the 1969 Miracle Mets had a Young Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan but the Numbers combined that '86 Staff out up is incomprehensible to say the least.
