It has been well documented that the Pittsburgh Steelers were the Team of the 70s but was there Defense also the Defense of the 70s one might argue.
When trying to get a Lombardi back in them days the rules were those cut out of a Mad Max Film....anything goes. As though Conan the Barbarian meets Planet of the Apes Hybrid. The Steelers won Four Lombardi's and it was tough sledding seeing what they had to go through to get them.
Sunday Talk...Throwback Talk #1....the best SUNDAY Defenses ever sponsored by..I dare you to throw the Flag on me when I hit this QB late as HE**:
Note: Defenses in any order.....
STEEL CURTAIN (Pittsburgh Steelers 4 Lombardi's in the 70s): Starting with Joe Greene and that awesome Linebacker Core and Defensive Backfield with these names....MEAN JOE Greene, Jack HAM, Jack LAMBERT, Mel BLOUNT, Donnie SHELL, LC Greenwood, Andy RUSSELL, and Dwight WHITE to name a few. Led by the Great Chuck Noll and the greatest Professional Owners in Sports...the Rooney's.
SILVER & BLACK (Oakland Raiders 1 Lombardi in 70s): They won in 1977 and had those hard-hitting Safeties....Jack Tatum and George Atkinson to go with the likes of DE Ted Hendricks, DT John Mutuzak, and DB Willie Brown. They loves being the Bad guy and hit like no others.
DOOMS DAY Defense (Dallas Cowboys 1 Lombardi in 70s): They won the Super Bowl vs the Broncos in 1978 in the Superdome. Led by one of the more famous Defenses of all time under America's Team Umbrella...the Dooms Day Defense. NT Randy White with bookends Harvey Martin and Ed "TOO TALL" Jones. Then those linebackers DD Lewis and Thomas "HOLLYWOOD" Henderson. The back End was covered by Safeties Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters......Smooth and as hard-hitting as they want to be.
ORANGE CRUSH Defense (Denver Broncos): The Orange Crush only made an appearance in the 1978 Super Bowl but that Defense in Mile High Stadium was flat out awesome. The late great Lyle Alzado and Rubin Carter (son Andre starred at Cal Berkeley and current NE Patriot) up front with Greta Duo at Linebacker in Randy Gradishar and ESPN NFL Analyst Tom "TJ" Jackson. With all that pressure they had the Corners to make the plays on the outside in Steve Foley and Louis Wright.
The most dominant Defense in that time was a no-brainer the Steel Curtain but those other Defenses were nothing short of spectacular. the Steelers lead in Players going to Canton from the 70s Defenses but a lot of players that played on these Five famous Defenses went to Canton.....the NFL Hall of Fame.
